Appalachian Trail Signs

Opinion

Letter to FYN Editor by Margaret Williamson, TEA Party of Gilmer County.

Our political leaders have campaigned on increasing tourism which can increase our SPLOST sales tax revenue. Ellijay and Gilmer County have received the recognition as an Appalachian Trail Community by the international Appalachian Trail Conservancy which enhances our community as a destination for Appalachian Trail tourism.

Highway signs, paid for by the Chamber of Commerce, showing this recognition have been in the commissioner’s office for nearly a year with promises of having them erected.

Most recently the chairman promised, in a board meeting, to have the signs put up after Labor Day but as of this writing, they have not been erected.

What better time to advertise an attraction of Gilmer County than when we expect thousands of tourists in the next few weeks?

Why isn’t the commissioner acting on our behalf?
