Rev. Benson Barrett : Obituary

Rev. Benson Cosby Barrett, age 98 of Duluth GA., formerly of Ellijay, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, October 22, 2013.He was born August 1st, 1915 in Norcross, GA., son of the late Paul Stanton and Leone Dorsey Barrett.
Rev. Barrett began his career after graduating from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in 1939. He enlisted in the Coast Guard, as stationed in Manitowoc, WI, where he met his wife Lois Fay. They married on June 30, 1943 at Two Rivers, WI. He then entered The Chaplain Corp in the United States Navy and served his country honorably in the Pacific during WWII on the USS Lamaar.

After the war, Rev. Barrett served as a pastor in the North Georgia Conference until 1950 when he was called back to active duty as a result of the Korean War. He served in the Marshall Islands, Hawaii, Okinawa, Japan and various bases in the United States. Subsequent to his retirement from the Navy, he again pastured Methodist churches in North Georgia. Rev. Barrett retired in 1972 from the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, and in 1969 he retired from active duty as a U.S. Navy Chaplain.

For 25 years the Barretts’ lived in Ellijay, GA., and loved their sojourn in the area filled with may friends and memories. Of all the places they lived, exotic or not, Ellijay was their most endearing. They truly loved the people and the community. He and his wife were one of 3 couples who started the Faith, Hope and Charity Recycle Store, formerly know as The Recycle Store.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, October 26th, 2013 from the First United Methodist Church of Ellijay with Rev. Allan Tarr officiating. Following the service Military Rites will be performed at the Logan Funeral Home Pavilion by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Interment will take place in the Ellijay City Cemetery.

Survivors include wife of 70 years, Lois Fay Barrett of the home in Buford, GA., daughters and sons-in-law Beryl and Dennis Erdal of Stanton, VA., Marsha and Perry Jakl of Buford, GA., sons and daughter-in-law Dough and Susan Barrett of Winston, GA., John Barrett of Hiawassee, GA., grandchildren Stephanie Erdal, Katie Jakl, Jennifer Jakl, Rhett Barrett, Eli Barrett and great-grandchild Allison Grace Barrett.

Family will receive friends from 1pm until the funeral hour at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Faith, Hope and Charity Recycle Store, 449 Industrial Blvd., Ellijay, GA. In memory of Rev. Barrett. You may send a condolence to the family at www.loganfuneralhome.com
