On November 21st, Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jimmy Long conducted a traffic stop on Highway 52 East near Big Creek Road. The stop was initiated because the driver failed to use his turn signal properly. During the initial contact, the driver seemed to be impaired and was asked to complete field sobriety tests. After the tests were given, the decision was made to place the driver into custody for DUI Drugs. The driver was identified as Christopher Mealer and the passenger was identified as Matthew York. The Drug Task Force was contacted to assist in the investigation. The Task Force had been receiving information that York and Mealer were distributing methamphetamine.

A Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit was also contacted. When the K-9 arrived, it gave a positive indication that controlled substances were inside the vehicle. During the search, approximately 35 grams of methamphetamine were located along with: 30 methadone pills, one morphine pill, and 5 capsules that are believed to be “Molly.” Both York and Mealer were charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine and Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute. They will also be charged for the pills located inside the vehicle. The capsules will be sent to the crime lab for identification before any charges will be taken.

During the investigation, Mealer’s wife arrived on scene. Consent was obtained to search the vehicle she arrived in. Syringes with suspected methamphetamine were located in that vehicle. Agents and deputies went to Mealer’s residence located on Farmsted Road in Ellijay. Once there a search was conducted and more items containing methamphetamine were located. The investigation is still ongoing and more arrests will be made. The approximate street value of the drug seized is $2,500.
