Featured Stories, Sports

The Gilmer JV boys took on Pickens in a rivalry game and gave Bobcat fans something to look forward to in the coming years. Resiliency and hard work was evident to those who were in attendance.Gilmer started the game quickly when Cole Edmondson drove to the basket to give the “Cats” an early lead. Pickens quickly tied it up with a basket of its own, and the game became a defensive battle for the remainder of the quarter.

Gilmer’s intense pressure was causing a plethora of turnovers for Pickens. A Russell Cochran drive resulted in a made free throw and an Edmondson steal led to two more points. Another Bobcat steal helped Chandler Cantrell score two more points, and after one quarter, the score was 7-7.

After a low scoring opening quarter, both teams looked to start fresh and score more points. Cochran’s persistence led to him scooping up a loose ball and scoring, and JT Bosley followed that up with another Bobcat score. With the score going back and forth, Edmondson grabbed a big rebound and took off down the court.

He was fouled in transition and it sent him to the charity stripe for a one-and-one bonus. He connected on both free throws and Isaac Hensley scored quickly after giving GHS a four point lead. Thaddeus Bowers made the last shot of the half for Gilmer and the “Cats” took a 19-17 lead to the locker room.

Pickens quickly took over the lead with a big three-pointer right out of the gate, but Samuel McArthur reclaimed the lead for the “Cats” with a two-point jumper. Pickens would pull back in front, but efforts by Edmondson, Hensley, and Cantrell would keep it close. With only the fourth quarter to play, the JV Cats trailed 32-29.

Gilmer had its best scoring quarter when it counted the most. Bowers grabbed an offensive rebound and made the putback to creep closer, but Pickens would eventually extend the Dragons’ lead to five points.

Bosley swiped the ball away and took it the distance for two points and McArthur connected on another jumper. A Pickens three-pointer that would have likely been the dagger was wiped out by an offensive foul, giving Gilmer a chance.

Cantrell had a clutch drive that resulted in two points to bring GHS within one. With little time left left on the clock, Bosley hit a three that rolled around the rim multiple times before falling in. The Dragons would attempt to tie it up, but was unsuccessful and the Bobcats took the game 42-40.

Edmondson led the “Cats” in scoring with 11 points, followed by Bosley with 7. Cantrell and Bowers each had 6.
