“Cats” Clipped in First Round

Featured Stories, Sports

The Gilmer High School basketball teams made their fans proud this year as each team earned a spot in the State Tournament. Though the odds were stacked against them, both the Lady “Cats” and Bobcats showed up and played their best in their games, ultimately they came up short, with the Lady “Cats” falling 73-34 at Columbus High School, and the “Cats” 76-55 to Fayette County at home. The Lady “Cats” started things off with the trip to face the Blue Devils, the team that was ranked #1 in AAAA and has produced WNBA talent before. Hall of Fame baseball player, Frank Thomas, is also an alum of CHS. None of this stopped the Lady “Cats” from giving maximum effort though, and those in attendance know that’s exactly what happened.

The game got underway when CHS won the tip, but the Lady “Cats” came out of the gate firing. Jade Green grabbed an offensive rebound and scored, giving GHS a 2-0 lead. Shortly after, Sarah Lambert nailed a three-pointer on a pass from Bailey Charles and Gilmer had a 5-0 lead.

Charles and Green would add four more points, the score was 9-6. Columbus started its run and never looked back, ending the quarter with a 25-10 lead over the Lady Cats.

Charles and Lambert scored eight points for Gilmer in the second quarter, but CHS extended the lead to 45-18 at the half. The Lady “Cats” played very well given the circumstances. Gilmer boxed out well, had good looks at the basket, and played pretty tight defense, but the height of CHS’ interior defense along with the sharp shooting Lady Blue Devils made it difficult to contend with.

The third and fourth quarters were more of the same. GHS gave it all and left it all out on the court. When all was said and done, Columbus cruised to a 73-34 victory. It was the last game for our senior girls and we wish them the best.

The boys had a slightly easier matchup on Saturday as they faced the Fayette County Tigers. The Bobcats was able to stay in it for most of the game, especially with the hot start by Joe Bob Charles and Wheeler Lancey. Three straight three-pointers by the duo gave the Bobcats a -9-4 lead. Lancey would go on to hit another three, but GHS would find itself down 19-12 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, fans saw nearly the same thing as the first. Lancey and Charles hit threes, while Chandler Burrell and Bailey Allen added two points each. Allen’s great drive got the game within four points, but Fayette pulled away and lead 34-25 at the half.

Gilmer had its hands full in the second half. Fayette was out-rebounding and out-running the “Cats” so much that the visitors started to pull away. The Bobcats had many small runs where the “Cats” would make up some ground, but the Tigers always answered back.

At the end of the game, Gilmer had fallen to Fayette 76-55 and the basketball season was over. Again, we wish the Bobcat seniors the best as they move on to bigger and better things.
