Bobcats Break Out Brooms: Pounce on Panthers on “Senior Night”

The Gilmer High School Bobcats soccer teams hosted the Ridgeland Panthers on “Senior Night.” The home teams swept the visitors with the Lady “Cats” demolishing pulverizing the Panther ladies, 5-1, and the “Cats” clawed out a 2-1 victory. Gilmer had 17 seniors honored: Florinda Escobar; Sierra Jenkins; Nohemi Reynoso; Miriam Rosales; Lily Tinajero; Miriam Salgado; Eddie Velasquez; Jamie Mendoza; Eric Chavez; Martin Cruz; Luis Garcia; Manny Lopez; Mateo Bautista; Manny Lopez; Justin Merideth; Ronaldo Vargas; and Neri Gonzales.The Lady “Cats” came from behind after the Lady Panthers drew first blood with an early score; however, Rosie Landerverde tied the game quickly at 1-1. Autumn Durham’s goal with 10:35 left in the first half gave Gimr a lead that would not be relinquished.

Durham scored a second goal in the second half, and Sierra Jenkins and Florinda Escobar each added a goal to secure the 5-1 win for Gilmer. It was the first win of the year for the Lady “Cats.”

During the break between games, before the aforementioned “Senior Night” ceremony former Bobcats Adam Jones, recently injured in an accident was honored and acknowledged by the teams and fans in attendance.

The Bobcat boys took part in a nail biter with Adan Coleote breaking a 1-1 tie with 4.8 seconds left in the game. Eddie Velasquez scored the first goal.
