Excited and patriotic school children lined the streets shouting, “USA, USA, USA,” as the parade turned the corner onto the square in downtown Ellijay.
Participating in the parade were the Gilmer High School Band, Color Guards, Veterans of past and present wars representing the five branches of military service, the Knights of Columbus, ROTC members, Citizen of the year; Kent Sanford, Lions Club President; Scott Griffith and 2014 Apple Queen; Sage Fitts, War War II veterans motorcade, and a host of veterans and family members.

Emcee, Sam Burrell, SMSgt, USAF, Retired, introduced and recognized the participates. Rubin Smith, Pastor, U.S. Army led the invocation, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by members of the 507th civil air patrolJennetta Kelly sang the national anthem.

Also recognized was Citizen of the year, Kent Sanford. The Gilmer County High School Chorus sang patriotic songs and the Gilmer High School Band played salute to the armed services, (directed by Sarah Harbin and Joe Pfluger respectively).

Burrell gave a touching and chilling history of Mr. Edward Elie,the Grand Marshall and a WWII veteran, and his time in the war.

The Knights of Columbus were introduced followed by a presentation of awards for the veterans essay and poster winners by Scott Griffith. Cadets placed the wreath on the monument and George McClellan played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes. A 21 gun salute was given by the Blue Ridge DAV Honor Guard. A somber “TAPS” was played by the Gilmer High School Band Bugler and the lowering of the flag to half-staff by the Wheeler High School Junior ROTC which was directed by SMSgt Les Love.

Family members and friends of veterans both alive, and those who have passed on, was filled with pride and respect for these men and women in uniform who serve or have served our country so unselfishly and honorably.

It was good to see the streets lined with children who are learning about our veterans and their sacrifices. There was laughter and tears throughout the ceremony but all those who attended were there for one basic goal….to honor our veterans. This goal was achieved in abundance.

The veterans and their families were invited to lunch by the Gilmer County Lions Club and received a warm welcome for their service.
