The Third Commandment: “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord Thy God in vain.” Exodus 20:7

O God, Eternal and Almighty, we bow before your presence in awe. Your name is Holy and we reverence you as the Triune God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Grant us understanding of the ways we are not to take your name in vain. We pray for those who profane your name by cursing. Help them to see that when they curse you they are damning their own souls. O God, such petty littleness is the result of an unchanged heart chained to evil and dedicated to the erroneous idea that man is bigger than you. Also help us who know you to understand that we take your name in vain when we call you Father and fail to be obedient as children, when we say that we love you and then refuse to yield our lives to you, when we refuse to worship you in your house, and when we call ourselves Christians and then deny it by our actions. Help us to be keepers of your name.

If this person who seeks you now is taking your name in vain, reveal to this one the glorious forgiveness that is possible in Jesus Christ your only begotten Son.

Amen.
