Gilmer County Detention Officer Arrested

Sheriff Stacy Nicholson releases the following information regarding the arrest of a Gilmer County Detention Officer. Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office has, on Monday April 13,2015, arrested and terminated a Detention Officer, Josh Posey.

Sheriff’s Detectives have been investigating multiple burglaries for approximately 2 weeks in which Neal Posey has been charged. During the course of the burglary investigation, the Detectives learned that Neal Poesy was an uncle of a Sheriff’s Office Detention Officer, Josh Posey. As the case developed and the Detectives learned more about the case, the need arose to conduct an interview with Josh about the case. During this interview, Josh made a false statement to the Detectives. Josh was at that time placed on administrative leave with pay until the rest of the case could be pursued. Josh also admitted he had made a false statement to Gilmer Deputies on a prior incident involving a traffic stop of a suspicious vehicle. This case also involved his uncle, Neal Posey.

On Monday, Detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Josh Posey, charging him with making a false statement. He was arrested and subsequently terminated.
Josh Posey was processed and booked into the Gilmer County Detention Center on Monday and directly after posted bond.
Neal Posey (Josh’s uncle) remains in the Gilmer County Detention Center. Detectives are still actively investigating his involvement in possibly more burglaries.

Sheriff Nicholson states,

“This is very disappointing to me as well as my staff. I make a point to give a speech to all new employees when I swear them in and warn them that even though they are beginning work with the Sheriff’s Office, they are not above the law and in fact can get themselves into more trouble sometimes than if they were regular citizens. We have high standards within the Sheriff’s Office and no matter how painful it may be, we intend to keep them high to maintain the trust of the citizens of Gilmer County.”
