A Look Back to a Seamless Summer

As we complete the first month of the School Year, many teachers may be asking their students what they did over the summer.

One summer story comes to us, not from a student, but from our Board of Education. The Board’s nurtition program had a busy summer hosting and completing their Seamless Summer Program.

The program ended its 2015 summer after serving 37,314 meals. These meals went to all the children of Gilmer County to support this ‘seamless’ upkeep of nutrition for our students throughout the summer. Hosting 10,176 breakfasts and 11,932 lunches in June and 7,591 breakfasts and 7,615 lunches in July, the Seamless Summer Program has continued to show growth in its 5th year.

Director Linda Waters spoke with us at FYN offering continued thanks and congratulations to all their volunteers and organizations who supported each site in the program as they continually drove to pick up and deliver the food to their own sites from the GMS central location. Volunteers from the Boys and Girls Club, the Craddock Center, Chick-fil-A, local churches, and the general community became the backbone of this program as Waters states, “We could not do this every year without them.”

This program does not stop for some of these volunteers as the move towards ideas of adopting certain students for Christmas and supporting their families and by donating Bookbags and school supplies for the school year. Programs like Stuff-The-Bus show our communities continued involvement and dedication to one another.

Seamless Summer not only supported students out of school, however, but in continued summer programs and sport camps as the student worked hard to maintain their responsibilities. Programs like the summer sports camps are also benefiting as they bring in other school systems and students to participate in our activities.

Even from a look back to summer, the county and school system continue to move forward in their duties to maintain and enhance the nutrition programs. Look to see new equipment coming into the schools in addition to the new artwork and decorations in that have graced our cafeterias.
