Probate Judge Bids Farewell to Office

Standing as her announcement, Probate Judge Anita Mullins has decided to not run a campaign in the coming Gilmer elections. With emotional tears she spoke the words, “I won’t be running for Probate Judge again.”

Having celebrated her 65th Birthday in August, Judge Mullins referenced a retirement focus on her family as the reason behind this announcement. Judge Mullins cares for her mother, who just turned 86. She has two children, Julie and David Mullins, and five grandchildren. With one joining the military, one working with a power company, one in High School, one in college, and the youngest only 5 years old, Mullins says her 23 year commitment to the county has to give way to personal life.

However, Mullins also stated, “I took the job to help people. I wanted to help and work for the people of this county, and whether I am a Judge or not, I will continue to help people whenever I can. I’m not a politician, I just do a job and service for citizens as the law would allow me to… I have never regretted the work I do, but I have missed certain events with the family.”

She has actually been in public service since her teenage years, Judge Mullins joined the Probate Office in 1993, then became Judge in September of 2003. With this announcement her consecutive terms will end on December 31, 2016.

Though she leaves the office, Mullins says she takes many things with her, from the chances to meet people all over the county and all over the world to a better understanding of people. Being both “a student and a leader” in the position requires you never stop learning. “It has been wonderful working here, I love my staff, they’re wonderful… You can’t do this job without them.”

When talking about serving the community, FYN asked Judge Mullins if she would ever be willing to sit with the next Probate Judge elected to pass on her knowledge and wisdom. “If that person wants the help, I understand things just from being here so long.” Though a hectic year lies ahead with the election process, Judge Mullins said she would make time for any candidate elected to help out.

Already offering her piece of key advice, Mullins warns candidates, “Don’t let the job consume you… I’ve let it consume some things through late nights.”

This announcement begs the question from the citizens, without an incumbent, will we see more candidates announcing? FYN will continue to follow announcements and campaigns in the coming months.

Returning to her family, Judge Mullins looks forward to the next adventure as a grandmother and devoting more time to her hobbies of crafting and sewing. With her recent 65th birthday and the family growing, the Judge simply said, “It’s just time.”
