Bobcats, Lady Cats Sweep Indians

In a make-up match from Feb. 22, the Gilmer High School tennis team hosted the Towns County Indians Wednesday.

Gilmer cruised to 5-0 victories in both boys and girls action against the Indians.

The Bobcats had a perfect sweep in singles action. Riley Hice, Isaac Hensley and Dusty Ray each won 8-0. Doubles contests saw Cole Edmondson and Chandler Cantrell win 8-0, while the duo of Matthew Bruner and Noah Chastain picked up an 8-1 victory.

Exhibition action featured Carter Hice winning a singles match 8-1 and Edmondson and Cantrell again winning 8-0.

The Lady Cats replicated the success of their singles counterparts. Ally Davis, Kali Malham and Hope Bobak each picked up 8-0 wins. Doubles matches included Hannah Thomas and Chancey Davis winning 8-3 and the combination of Katie Marick and Katie Sheahan picking up an 8-1 triumph.

In girls exhibition competition, Sophie Morrison won a singles match 8-0. Moriah Martin and Abigail Cantlay won 8-5, while Mary Elizabeth Walker and Lauren Cole earned an 8-4 victory.

“I was very proud of how all the players, boys and girls, played with Towns,” said GHS coach Donna Parks. “A majority of the matches were won 8-0. With all the rained out practices and cancelled/rescheduled matches, it was good to see everyone get a chance to show us how they can play. It also gave some the confidence to know they have what it takes.”

Gilmer hosts Woody Gap Monday, then begins region play Tuesday at home against Ridgeland and Wednesday against Southeast Whitfield. GHS ends the week by traveling to Towns County to return the favor against the Indians Thursday.
