Gilmer Golf Hits the Links

The 2016 Gilmer High School golf season officially got underway this week, with action in both Union County and Dawson County.

The season began Monday at Union County, with Towns County also swinging its clubs against the Panthers.

The Bobcats finished third, by shooting a 205. Towns finished second by shooting a 196, while Union won the boys affair by shooting a 183. Matthew Waddell shot the lowest for GHS with a 49

The Lady Cats fell to the Lady Panthers, 128-192. The Lady Indians only had one girl participant. Macie Chastain was the lowest-scoring Gilmer player, finishing with a 63.

GHS then traveled to Dawson County Wednesday, with Forsyth Central also joining the action.

In the boys contest, Gilmer shot a 204, the hosting Tigers shot a 194 and Forsyth Central took first place by shooting a 182. Joshua Dobbs shot a 47 to lead the Bobcats, with J.T. Bosley just behind after shooting a 48.

The Lady Cats fell 141-149 to Dawson, with Forsyth Central only having one girl player. The competition was called just seven holes in, due to weather.

McKenzie Chambers was the lowest scorer for the Lady Cats, shooting a 47.

Coach Sean Thom commented on both games and remained optimistic about the season, despite the early struggles. “I thought our kids did well, given the circumstances of not practicing much, due to the weather,” Thom said. “It may not seem like much, but the guys are getting better, shaving two strokes off their team score from the last match. However, we are inconsistent from top to bottom. With five matches in the next two weeks, we need to focus on getting a top six that will help us to compete. The girls were on pace to improve from the first match as well; however, due to weather and lightning, they were only able to get seven holes in.”
