Late Lady Cats, Rebels Goals Key to Outcomes

Another rainy, thrilling chapter was added to the Gilmer/Fannin rivalry yesterday, as the Clear Creek Middle School Lady Cats picked up a 2-1 home victory over the Fannin County Middle School Lady Rebels and the Rebels fought to a 2-2 tie over the Bobcats.

The girls match started with a stalemate, until Cadence Smith secured a pass from Ashley Spagnola and punched the ball into the goal with 7:11 left in the first half.

Fannin tied the game when Kinsley Sullivan scored with 10:35 remaining in regulation. It appeared the contest was going to end in a tie, but Naomi Coombs took advantage of an open goal with 50 seconds left and launched a shot into the net to give CCMS a 2-1 advantage. FCMS failed to reply before regulation ended, giving the Lady Cats the late victory.

Alex Snelgrove helped the Bobcats get on the scoreboard early in the boys match, scoring off an Elijah Swartz assist just three minutes into the first half. Cohutta Hyde tied the game with 3:05 remaining before halftime, with a goal for the Rebels.

Still in a 1-1 deadlock with 1:45 left in the game, Lucas Lopez punched a shot into the goal for the Bobcats. Once again, it appeared a late Clear Creek goal was going to spell victory, but a penalty call with 45 seconds remaining gave Andrew Jones the opportunity to punt a penalty kick across the goal line as time expired on the clock, providing an indecisive 2-2 tie for the boys contest.

The Lady Cats are now 3-5 (2-5 in region play) for the year, while the Bobcats sit at 4-2-2 (4-1-2 in region play). CCMS finishes the regular season today, against Pickens. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
