The Gilmer County Recreation and Parks Department softball league hosted an 15U contest last Tuesday at Crump Field, as Team Watkins picked up a 10-1, five-inning victory over Team Freeman.
A pair of wild pitches scored two Watkins runs in the top of the second, before Kassie Martin smacked an inside-the-park home run to widen the Watkins lead to 3-0. Another walk later came home, as Ashlyn Lee scored on a fielding error at second. Starting Freeman hurler Emily Dale got her team out of the inning by recording a pair of strikeouts, before a caught stealing ended the frame.
Maddie Wright drew a one-out walk in the top of the third and came around to score for Watkins on a throwing error. Mattie Bryant led off the fourth inning with a single and later scored on an error. Martin again plated a run, this time on an error, to extend the lead to 7-0.
The lone Freeman run came home in the bottom of the fourth. Kinsley Beck garnered a sacrifice groundout that got Freeman on the scoreboard. Later with two out and two baserunners on, a strikeout put a damper on the Freeman rally.
Watkins then put the game out of reach in the top of the fifth. Ethanie Dantin doubled to score Haley Brown with no outs, before later coming home to score with one out on a wild pitch. An infield single with two outs brought Madeline Watts across the plate to give Watkins a 10-1 lead. After a caught stealing ended the frame, the game was called and awarded to Watkins.
