Bobcats fall to Bruins

This past Friday, the 0-7 Bobcats hosted the 5-3 Northwest Whitfield Bruins. This was the 6th matchup between the two teams, with Northwest ahead of Gilmer in the series 4-2. To get the night started, fighters, survivors, and caregivers release balloons for breast cancer awareness month.

The Bruins won the toss and elected to receive the ball to start the game. Both teams started the game off turning the ball over. For the Bruins, a missed field goal would give the ball to the Bobcats on the 15-yard line to start their first drive. As for the Bobcats, a bad snap caused the Bruins to recover on the Bobcats 18-yard line.

After the recovery, the Bruins found the end zone. Quarterback Luke Shiflett completed an 18-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Will Blanchard, putting the Bruins up 7-0 with 5:07 left in the first quarter.

After the Bruins touchdown, the Bobcats responded quickly. Quarterback David Smith completed to Griffin Cagle for a 65-yard touchdown. Casas PAT was unsuccessful, leaving the Bobcats trailing the Bruins 6-7 with 4:07 left in the first quarter.

The Bruins offense came back out on their own 27-yard line. After a long drive, a 12-yard run by running back Dominique Sistrunk put the Bruins up over the Bobcats 14-6 with 11:44 left in the second quarter.

The Bobcats offense found a way to answer back. After a big reception by Cagle, quarterback David Smith punched in the 2-yard touchdown. The PAT by Casas was unsuccessful, leaving the Bobcats trailing by 2 with 7:29 left in the second quarter.

Both offenses exchanged three and outs after the touchdown. Late in the second quarter, running back Dominique Sistrunk scampered in for a 17-yard run to put the Bruins up 21-12 with 1:43 left in the second quarter.

The Bobcats two-minute offense rushed on the field to try and put a drive together, but could not execute. The two teams headed into the locker room with the score remaining 21-12.

Going into the third quarter, neither offense could get anything going. The two teams exchanged three and outs, ending the third quarter without a score.

Late in the fourth, Bruins quarterback Luke Shiflett blasted through the Bobcats defense for a 50-yard touchdown. The PAT was unsuccessful, giving the Bruins a 15-point lead over the Bobcats with 2:36 left in the fourth quarter.

The Bobcats offense came out, but quarterback David Smith threw a interception. A bad snap by the Bruins sent the ball into the end zone where the Bobcats would recover for a safety making the score 27-14 with 33 seconds left in the forth quarter.

The Bobcats offense came back on the field, but time ended before they could put anymore points on the board. The Bruins left Gilmer County with a 27-14 win over the Bobcats.

The Bobcats will travel to Ridgeland next Friday to face former head coach Tank and the Panthers.
