Gilmer Middle School Named State Winner in the $2 million Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Contest
School will receive $25,000 in Samsung technology and the opportunity to win additional prizes
Ellijay GA, 2017 – Gilmer Middle School announced today that teacher Robert McCart is the winner for the state of Georgia in the HYPERLINK “http://www.samsung.com/us/” Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, a nationwide competition to increase interest in science, technology, engineering, agriculture and math (STEAM) by challenging teachers and students to take topics out of traditional classroom settings and into local communities.
Mr. Larry Walker, Principal at Gilmer Middle School says, “We are very proud of Mr. McCart and his students, we strive to find real world applications that involve kids in our decision making processes. Mr. McCart stresses real world application for solving real world problems and implements them in his lessons as he uses technology to make school fun while teaching STEAM skills and standards in his Language Arts classes. We appreciate the folks at SAMSUNG for their continued support of our school as we work collaboratively with them to engage more kids and developing more leaders for tomorrow.”
Gilmer Middle School has moved onto the National round of the competition for their project using STEAM to address the issue of child seatbelt safety. The students of Gilmer Middle School chose seatbelt safety as their project after a classmate was injured in a near-fatal crash. Gilmer Middle School was selected from over 3,100 entries to be one of five schools in Georgia to become a state finalist in the Solve for Tomorrow contest. In the next phase of the competition, Mr. McCart created a lesson plan that will allow the students to design, engineer and test new seatbelt prototypes in an educational setting. Over the next two months, Gilmer Middle School will complete the proposed project and film the lessons for a documentary that will be submitted for the national competition. Winners of the national competition will be announced in March, 2017.
