Mrs. Kathleen Lorick Shealy Are: Obituary

Kathleen Lorick Shealy Are of Blue Ridge, Georgia, formerly of  Marietta and Ellijay, Georgia, passed away on November 11, 2017.

Mrs. Are, a child of the late Kline and Nannie Shealy of Batesburg, South Carolina, was born on July 18, 1931, in Batesburg, South Carolina and graduated from Batesburg-Leesville High School and Winthrop College. As a lifelong educator, she taught high school music and private music students. After organizing the kindergarten at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Marietta, she served as its first Director, as well as teaching classes for a number of years. She was active in the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and served as president at Blackwell Elementary School, and co-president at Sprayberry High School in Marietta, in addition to volunteering as Glee Club Director at Blackwell School, and in adult leadership positions for both the Boy Scout and Girl Scout organizations. She supported the athletic activities of her children, both as a school booster club member, and in a primary leadership role in the Cobb County Youth Soccer Association. She loved music, was an avid reader, enjoyed camping and needlecrafts, and loved her Hope Lutheran Church family, of which she was a founding member. She loved her mountain home.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Ward W. “Bill” Are, Jr.  Also surviving are her children Ward W. “Skip” Are, III (Robin) of Powder Springs, Patrice Kathleen Are Grizzle of Adairsville, and David C. Are (Melony) of Grover, South Carolina. She is also survived by her grandchildren Georgia Kathleen Johnson (Brian), Timothy Grizzle (Beth), Stephanie Flatt (Brandon), Carrie Christensen (Clayton), Danielle Are, and Clayton Are, ten great-grandchildren, and her brother Ellis Shealy (Elaine) of Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Kline and Nannie Shealy of Batesburg, South Carolina, and her brothers Leon Shealy (Louise) of Cleveland, Tennessee and Haskell Shealy (Pauline) of Taylorsville, North Carolina, and son-in-law Tony Grizzle of Adairsville, Georgia.

The family will receive friends at Hope Lutheran Church, Ellijay, Georgia on November 20th from 4:00-6:00 o’clock. Memorial services for Mrs. Are will be held at Hope Lutheran Church the following day at 11:00 o’clock. Burial will be in Batesburg-Leesville, South Carolina at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 3595 Old Highway 5, S., Ellijay, GA 30540.
