Gilmer Falls To Lumpkin On Homecoming

The Bobcats welcomed in the Indians to Huff Mosely Stadium for the 2018 Homecoming game on Friday night for a non region battle.  With the stands packed for both the game and the anticipation of the new King and Queen being announced at halftime the excitement was in the air.

The Indians won the toss and chose to receive the ball in the second half.  With Gilmer getting the ball first Senior David Smith would have the opportunity to lead his troops down the field.  The Cats offense drove the ball very well on their first drive before being stopped just short on a fourth down play.  The Indians would also be stopped and turn over the ball on downs.  Gilmer would strike first after starting the possession on their on 1 yard line.  On first down Quarterback David Smith cut to the left side and 99 yards later the Bobcats were up 7-0 with the extra point by #90 Aldolfo Bautista.

On the next drive the Indians struck quickly.  After a missed tackle by a Bobcats defensive player, the Lumpkin running back had clean air to run and matched the touchdown count for the home team.  The extra point was no good leaving the score in favor of the Bobcats at 7-6.  Gilmer would put up one more score in the first half but the 2 point conversion was no good after a 15 yard penalty.  The score going to halftime was 13-7 in favor of the Bobcats.

Immediately after the homecoming festivities as the teams prepared to take the field, the officials delayed the start of the second half due to lightening in the area.  After the mandatory 30 minutes the teams were allowed to come to the field and warm up for the third quarter of play.  The Indians received the ball and  on 2 plays struck big on a long touchdown run  with 10:58 left in the third giving them a lead that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

The final quarter was long with the addition of two more lightening delays both lasting the required 30 minutes.  The first occurred at 6:44 and the second at 4:02.  The Bobcats would be held scoreless in the second half while the offense of Lumpkin a total of 17 points giving them the victory over the Bobcats 23-13.

Standouts for the Gilmer in the game were David Smith with over 130 yards all purpose yards and several tackles on the night, Taylor Brogdon carried the ball 14 times for 65 yards and 3 solo tackles.  The standout player for the defense was Mack Towery.  Towery had 6 and 1/2 tackles and was in on more than could be counted.    The Bobcats are off next Friday September 14th and hopefully can get some of their players back off of injury in time for their game at Pickens High School and the Dragons on the 21st.  The Bobcats  start 0-4 on the season with a tough Region schedule starting in two weeks.  These players are all in and on board with the philosophy of the new coaching staff.
