With the 2018 basketball season finally getting fired up the Gilmer Bobcats welcomed the Murray Indians to Ellijay Ga on Friday night. Coaches from both schools have put in an enormous amount of time to prepare their athletes for this moment.
The Varsity girls took to the floor in the first game of the night and it didn’t take long for both The Lady Indians and the Lady Cats to kick in the real hustle gear and get the action going. Even though Gilmer came away with a big win, the Lady Indians played hard but struggled to keep up with the scoring for the home team. The Lady Cats put up 49 in the victory with the help of several players. Leading the scoring on the night for Gilmer were Emma Dayton with 11 points, MaryLee Callihan with 8, and Emma Callihan with 7 on the night. The Lady Cats scoring stayed consistent throughout the game with 14 in 1st, 15 in 2nd, and 16 in the 3rd. Gilmer was held to just 6 points in the final period but held on for the victory over the Lady Indians of Murray County. The Gilmer Lady Cats next scheduled game will be in the Tipoff Classic on Saturday as they face the Hiawassee Dam Lady Eagles.
It was the varsity boys taking the floor in game 2 for Gilmer. As the music rang throughout the gym, the fans from both schools were ready to see their team in action. The game started fast for the Indians who ran the floor with ease scoring almost at will on the Bobcats. The boys of Gilmer never laid down and kept the game exciting with several lead changes over the course of the 4 quarters. It wasn’t until last in the fourth when the Bobcats found a way to get momentum on their side and stretch a lead. The Indians played hard all night but ran out of steam as the game came to an end. The Bobcats walked away with a hard-fought win in a game where they did not play their best. The 58-48 score could’ve very easily been reversed giving the Indians the victory. The Bobcats will play Hiawassee Dam on Saturday and Fannin on Monday as part of the Tipoff Classic be held at Gilmer High School.
