Gilmer Varsity Sweeps Gordon Central

Saturday afternoon saw rain and thunder on the outside and lightning on the inside as the Varsity Cats and Lady Cats took to the floor in non-region action against the Gordon Central Warrior teams. the Gilmer ladies came out of the locker room ready to play and the boys followed suit in notching another victory on the respective records.

Once again the Lady cats defense held strong against a team that wasn’t afraid to shoot the basketball from anywhere on the court. The Lady Warriors had four players blasting 3 pointers from behind the arc during the pre-game warm-ups.  With that, it was seen to be a very high scoring game for both teams.  Saturday’s game did not disappoint the players, coaching staff or the fans.  Gilmer held Gordon Central to 31 points in the contest while the Lady Cats offense took advantage of a smaller unit on the floor for the Lady Warriors.  in the 56 points put up by Gilmer, two Lady Cats led the way with everyone who entered the game making a contribution to the win.  Mary Lee Callihan led all scoring with 16 including making 3 out of 4 from the charity stripe. Following close behind with 10 points was Mallory Kiser who was also 3 for 4 from the line.  The Gilmer Lady Cats remained undefeated with the victory over the Gordon Central Lady Warriors.

Next up the Varsity boys jogged out of the locker room to the sounds of Johnny Cash filling the gym.  Once again the pregame warm-ups could’ve had everyone in the stands that this game would be close and maybe even won at the buzzer.  Well, it did not disappoint.  The Warriors started out fast in the first period and carried a slim 17-15 lead into the second where the Bobcats through consistent play and a steady pace outscored their opponents by 9 for a halftime lead of 32-23.  The Warriors had a well-needed rest during the intermission and came out rejuvenated.  The third period scoring for the Warriors kept the game hovering around an 8 point differential but as in the first half the GC players looked tired and could not hang around on the scoreboard.  In the 64-46 win, the Cats stayed consistent.  Scoring by period for Gilmer was 15-17-15-17 for yet another Bobcat win.  Leading the scoring for the home team was Kell Weaver with 18 points followed close behind by David Smith with 14 and Tripp Pierce with 12 on the afternoon.  Have a great game and leading the scoring overall was Central’s Dawson Lackey with 26 Warrior points.  Lackey’s effort was outstanding in the loss to Gilmer.  The Varsity Bobcats moved to 5-1 on the early season.
