Rebels Ruin Home Opener For Bobcats

The Gilmer Bobcats opened the 2019 baseball season at home as the Rebels of Fannin County came to Ellijay, Ga.

The home opener didn’t go as planned for Coach Jeff Thurman and his Bobcats.  The Rebels took control early with a 5 run second inning and never looked back as they added 3 in the fourth and 6 in the fifth for a 14 run five-inning game. Getting the opening day start for Gilmer was Evan Frady. In Frady’s three innings of work, the Rebels had 5 runs on four hits, four walks, and Frady struck out 2 Fannin batters on 61 pitches.  David Smith and Jess Buckner came in as relief with Smith working two-thirds of an inning and Buckner completing one and one-third innings.  In the outing for Smith, 26 pitches allowing 3 runs with 2 of 3 being earned, three walks and one strikeout.  Buckner gave up six runs, all earned on 9 hits 1 walk and had 4 strikeouts.

Offensively for Gilmer it was the slowest day at the plate that the Bobcats have had in a long time.  The home team was held to just four walks on the day.  Three Rebel pitchers combined to earn a 14-0 no-hit shutout win with Hunter Gray being credited with the victory. Being patient at the plate for Gilmer was Evan Frady, Hunter Bowyer, Austin daman, and Tyler Woody to reach base with walks.

In the win over Gilmer, the Fannin Rebels had 14 runs with 13 being earned on 13 hits 8 walks and the Rebel hitters struck out 7 times.  The Bobcats will get a chance at redemption on Wednesday, February 20th as they travel to the home of the Rebels for a 5:00 PM game.
