Cats Take Road Win At Union

In a game originally scheduled for Thursday, the Bobcats traveled to Blairsville for a non-region battle with the Panthers of Union County.

After a long afternoon and evening on Tuesday for the Cats of Gilmer, They showed early that they were there to play ball and come away with a win.  The Bobcats scored early to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a leadoff single by Evan Frady to get things started. Hunter Bowyer coaxed a walk to put runners on 1st and 2nd for Austin Daman.  The first pitch to Daman was a strike and both Frady and Bowyer caught the Panthers on their heels and each moved up on stolen bases.  Daman would push both base runners across on ground ball ripped to left for an RBI double.  Standing at second with Tyler Woody up to bat, Daman wouldn’t wait long to be the third Cat to dent the scoreboard.  Woody doubled followed by a Bertolini single advancing Woody to third.  The Cats lead stayed at 3 runs as Wolfson and Griggs followed with outs to end the inning.  The Gilmer bats cooled off for innings 2 and 3.  As the 4th through 7th innings came around, the Bobcats once again was able to get a little something going against the opposing pitcher.  Gilmer posted 1 run in each of the innings that followed for a 7 run total over 7 innings of play.

Taking the mound for Gilmer in the 7-3 victory over the Panthers was Jonas Griggs who started followed by Hunter Bowyer in relief.  Griggs went 6 strong innings and pitched into the 7th where he didn’t record and out.  In his 6 frames of work, Griggs allowed just 1 run on 1 hit with 7 strikeouts.  Bowyer in relief was looking to close out the game and preserve the win for his starter.  In his 1 inning of work, he allowed 2 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk on 18 pitches(10 being strikes).  The home team Panthers fought hard in the bottom of the seventh for 3 runs before Bowyer shut down any hopes of a major comeback.  The Cats were to welcome Model to Gilmer High School on Friday but the weather didn’t cooperate and the game was canceled due to rain.
