Earth Day keeps Gilmer looking Beautiful

The downtown celebration served as a retreat for the 94 volunteers who celebrated Earth Day this year by picking up litter and trash across Gilmer County.

With 70 bags of trash collected from volunteers on Saturday morning, April 27, alone, the day of the county’s celebration was only a part of the project as the Explorers collected 76 bags and Walnut Mountain residents collect 27 bags during the prior week.

Jay Zipperman, Chairman of Keep Gilmer Beautiful, said that 24 sites have been cleaned on Saturday. More showed up to the parking lot beside the Gilmer County Courthouse to listen to Deuce and the Wild Cards while sharing food provided by local restaurants Shane’s Rib Shack, Zaxby’s, and the Hitching Post.

Booths were also set up for fun and information ranging from Ellijay Rocks to the Kids FERST Program. The Gilmer County Animal Shelter even brought several friends to enjoy the sun and people in their van.
