Major Adam Smith Promoted to Chief Deputy

On January 2, 2024, Sheriff Nicholson promoted Major Adam Smith to Chief Deputy.
Smith is a 30-year veteran law enforcement officer. He began his career with the Reinhardt College Department of Public Safety in 1994 and joined the Gilmer County Sheriff’s Office as a patrol deputy in 1997.
During his years with our agency, Smith has served as patrol deputy, detective, sergeant and lieutenant in the criminal investigations division, and agency training officer. He then held positions as uniformed patrol night shift watch commander, jail administrator, and commander of the Field Operations Division before being promoted to Major and now his current assignment as Chief Deputy.
Sheriff Nicholson stated, “With the recent retirement of Chief Deputy Randy Moore, it left a gap in the command structure of the Sheriff’s Office that will not be easy to fill, however, I have worked with Adam for the last 27 years, and I have all the confidence in the world in him. He will be able to step in, hit the ground running, and help me “guide the ship” with no problem.”
Help us congratulate him on his promotion!
