Lois Fay Barrett: Obituary

Lois Fay Barrett, born 3/29/20, passed on 9/11/19.  Born in Plaines, WI, she worked briefly before marrying a Coast Guardsman, who soon after became a Navy Chaplain. She was a loving and dedicated wife of 70 years and mother to her four children.

The Faith, Hope and Charity Store, formerly known as The Recycle Store, began in the basement of what is now the Good Samaritan Catholic Church. She and her husband, the late Rev. Benson Barrett, were the co-founders of what was perhaps their proudest lifetime achievement. She lived to see it outgrow three locations and was so proud of the community services and help it provided. In her later years, she took great joy in knitting newborn caps for local hospitals.

The First United Methodist Church of Ellijay was her church home for many years, as was any church to which they were stationed or assigned. She was the quintessential wife to a chaplain and to a pastor, never complaining and without fail rising to fill whatever need a church had at any moment. She was the Lord’s servant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Benson Barrett; son, John Barrett; and grandson, Nathan Barrett. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Beryl Erdal (Dennis) of Staunton, VA; Mrs. Marsha Jakl (Perry) of Buford, GA; one son and daughter-in-law, Doug Barrett (Lorraine) of Winston, GA; five grandchildren, Stephanie Erdal, Rhett Barrett, Katie Jakl, Eli Barrett, Jennifer Jakl; and two great granddaughters.

A brief graveside service will be held on Saturday, 9/21/19 at 1:00 at the Logan Funeral Home Pavilion. Graveside interment will follow in the Ellijay City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to the Faith, Hope and Charity Store of Ellijay. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.loganfuneralhome.com. Logan Funeral Home & Chapel in charge of the arrangements.
