Reaching just past the midpoint of April, Gilmer has confirmed another case in the county, reaching a total of eight cases.
Just on the heels of announcements of expanded testing collection sites and one opening in Ellijay, Gilmer’s Public Safety Director, Keith Kucera, said, “The actual testing takes about 10 minutes and results will be available in 24-48 hours. Specific instructions will be given for post tested people to follow until their test results are available.” This could see numbers continue to increase in days to come as testing becomes more widely available and quicker results come in.

As people attend church digitally this Easter Sunday, the DPH have released their noon report on county cases.
Gilmer rose another one to a total of 7 cases today. But with only two counties left in Georgia without a case and predictions that we are still on the early side of the “curve.” Experts say that precautions are needed even more as we continue to face this threat.

GILMER COUNTY, Ga. – Today saw a skip in cases for Gilmer as two more were confirmed by the Department of Health’s 7:00 p.m. report.
According to the report, a total of six cases have been identified in Gilmer now, with no reported deaths. As the DPH continues contact tracing and the both the county and state urge the social distancing and stay at home plans, isolation and treatment for these cases continue in hopes of recovery.

GILMER COUNTY, Ga. – With three new cases in as many days, this fourth case in Gilmer has citizens’ concerns on the rise.
However, experts, doctors, and even the President said they expected this week to be much worse.
UPDATE – April 7, 2020 – Third Case in Gilmer Confirmed
GILMER COUNTY, Ga – Less than 24-hours after confirmation came in about a second case, Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) reported Gilmer’s third COVID-19 case.
No additional details are known about the cases at this time.
The news comes on the same day that the Georgia National Guard has chosen to clean and sanitize the nursing home. The National Guard is assisting long-term care facilities across the state in order to ensure the safety of the state’s elderly and high-risk patients.
UPDATE – April 6, 2020 – Second Case in Gilmer confirmed
Authorities are continuing services in the county and plans to sanitize and clean facilities have grown to include the National Guard in the coming days. However, Gilmer did not have a reported case until March 30, and only now, on April 6, has had a second case. Experts are continuing to speculate and expect more cases in the state to come before the numbers begin decreasing.
According to the DPH, Gilmer still has not reported any deaths from complications or involvement of COVID-19 at this time.
UPDATE – March 31, 2020 – Gilmer Fire and Rescue responds
Gilmer Fire Chief Daniel Kauffman offered a few words to address the new confirmed case and the county’s already-in-use plans for virus response saying:
Gilmer County Fire Rescue is actively taking every precaution to help prevent the contraction and spread of COVID-19 virus. The department is currently following the CDC recommendations on the use of personal protective equipment in regards to patient contact. We are also working with the Metro- Atlanta Hospital Coalition to put into place best practices regarding the care and treatment of potential COVID-19 patients. The daily operations of our department and our crews will continue to change as updates come forth from local, state, and federal leaders. Currently, the department has closed down the fire stations to both the public and family visitors. We have stopped all organized training where multiple stations would gather in groups. Our current fire and EMS training platforms are being conducted via a web-based training programs and completed on an individual basis. Our senior staff continue to meet in small groups to stay abreast of changing conditions, while observing social distancing as recommended by the CDC. As we make our way through these unchartered waters, Gilmer County Fire Rescue will continue to meet every 911 call with the urgency it deserves and delivering first class care and compassion to our community.

GILMER COUNTY, Ga. – With daily reports updating from the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH), today marks the first officially recorded confirmed case appearing in Gilmer County.
It has taken Gilmer County nearly a month for a confirmed case as reports began coming in at the beginning of March. The DPH now reports that 2809 cases have been reported in Georgia total with 707 hospitalized as of today.
Gilmer has been a metaphorical island on the 515 corridor after Fannin reported a case on March 24, and Pickens as early as March 20.
Practices and shelter-in-place orders have already been in place for Gilmer, Ellijay, and East Ellijay since last week.
According to their Public Information Officer, Gilmer County Department of Public Safety said, “The EMA has worked for the previous 2 – 3 weeks as if we already had cases here in the county. We have been, and will remain vigilant and thorough with our responsibilities to the citizens of Gilmer County. We are successfully protecting our patients, our First Responders, and our County employees with every means possible with the PPE we have on hand. We will continue to monitor the virus’s progress here and in surrounding counties, and make any necessary adjustments in public safety protocol as the situation warrants.

Everyone it seems from area counties and different state license plates including hot spot New York have been flooding the East Ellijay Lowe's and Walmart like it's a home improvement vacation for them. They have been bringing in there children by the numbers. They don't seem to care about you or anyone else when it comes to social distancing. One customer asked me why am I standing so far from him, are you kidding me? A cashier today was intentionally coughed on while disinfecting the counter ! Most of the drugs come from Atlanta and surrounding state's. Of course no one realizes that they could be contaminated. People should just stay put and get off drugs. Your health is more important.
Barbie, The drug dealers in the city have quite enough customers to keep them busy. They aren't hitting the roads to find new markets. As long as there is a demand for drugs home grown dealers will supply them. There were dealers there when i was in high school 35 years ago and there are dealers there still today. I left to get away from all of the Meth back then....turns out it was down here too. I swear if you dropped an addict in the middle of the ocean they would end up on a boat with a drug dealer...Do not think keeping your children away from one are will protect them.

unlikely due to privacy concerns, it's a medical condition and it's illegal for doctors to release information about patients, but it might help stop the spread if people where made aware of where this person traveled around town and at what times of day before they where diagnosed so we could know if we where potentially exposed to the patient.
This comment is for most of these posts. First people who live in Atlanta are not trash. Second if there is a confirmed case of the virus people need to remember every person you come in contact with from your neighbor down the street to the place where you get gas is a potential carrier because everyone they are exposed to you are exposed to. All of the cars that are constantly in the Walmart parking lot are proof that people ste not staying at home. I saw the Walmart lot was near full as I went to CVS drive through window to pick up a prescription, 2 days ago.
Yeah because people NEED SUPPLIES because a bunch of asshats panic bought EVERYTHING and left nothing for those that actually need things and so you have to go in everyday hoping you get lucky and they have what you need.
I believe all this people coming from big cities are bringing it to our little counties, I work at Carter's lake and would not believe the people are there from other counties it is scary l try to keep my hands in gloves when I pull the garbage and cleaning the bathrooms , please yall stay at home are close every thing down
We should all just pray we don't get it. Pray for God to spare us. There's a woman that started a prayer chain that's asking people to take a red ribbon and pray over it and tie it around your doorknob to represent the prayer you asked of the Lord to keep your family and friends safe during this time.

You can not out run this virus the only thing you are doing is giving it to everyone you come it contact with. Stay out of our little town. Stay out of our stores. For GOD sake think of everyone around you instead of just your self.
