Each May, National Foster Care Month provides an opportunity to shine a
light on the experiences of the more than 400,000 children and youth in
the foster care system.
Each May, National Foster Care Month provides an opportunity to shine a
light on the experiences of the more than 400,000 children and youth in
the foster care system. According to U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, as of September 30, 2010, there are over 1,500 children
in public foster care waiting to be adopted in Georgia. Of these, over
50 of them are Gilmer County residents. Unfortunately, we have less
than 1/3 of foster families to assist the county in providing a
nurturing home until the children return to their biological family or
adopted by a loving family.

On May 10th, the Board of Commissioners graciously signed a
proclamation deeming May as National Foster Care Month in Gilmer County.
“Receiving this proclamation is an honor, but it is only the first
step to changing a lifetime of a child or youth in foster care. The
truth is that all children deserve a safe, nurturing adult to advocate,
protect, and provide the basic necessities in life. I encourage Gilmer
County residents to take a stand with me and volunteer their services by
calling 1-877-210-KIDS today.”
