SFC Ernest Ferdinand Fohrman (RET), age 79 of Ellijay, GA died Friday, October 14, 2016 at Northside Hospital Cherokee in Canton, GA.
Ernie was born February 3, 1937 in Laona, Wisconsin to the late Herman August and Katherine Eleanor Fohrman. Ernie was a devoted and supportive husband, cherished father and a beloved grandfather and great-grandfather.
SFC Ernest F. Fohrman (RET) dedicated his life to his country and family. He served in the United States Army for a total of 25 years. He served with the Big Red One (The First Infantry Division) and was involved in all four Tet Offenses in Vietnam. He also served with the Military Police in Ft. Riley, Kansas, and was the NCO with the Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center in Kitzigen, Germany in which he helped to provide rehabilitation and educational service to military personnel and conducted classes and educational awareness to American school children. He was the recipient of two Bronze Stars as well as many other medals and awards. He served with the Armed Services in places such as Colorado, Alaska, Kansas, Germany and Georgia. Subsequent to his retirement with the United States Army, Ernie worked with the Griffin Company in which he provided his many management skills in several facets for the company until his final retirement.
Ernie was a 4th Degree Knight with the Ellijay Knights of Columbus Council and served as their treasurer for several years. He dedicated his life with his wife to many charitable organizations and his church, as well as serving on the Compliance and Amenities Committees with the Good Neighbor Club of Coosawattee River Resort. He was well respected by his family and peers.
Ernie is preceded in the recent death of his beloved wife of 58 years, Sally Ann Fohrman.
Surviving family members include daughters and son-in-law, Katherine E. & George C. Powell of Cumming, GA, Valerie K. Jones of Snellville, GA, sons and daughter-in-law, Scott M. Fohrman, Troy H. and Erin Fohrman, all of Snellville, GA; 7 grandchildren, Michael Powell, April Powell, Victoria Fohrman, Troy Fohrman, Brittany Fohrman, Drew Jones, Nicole Fohrman; and 6 great-grandchildren, Nathaniel Lyons, Laila Fohrman, William D’Olivo, Thayer Bazzell, Brayden Bazzell and Sunshine Fohrman.
The family will receive guests from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM, Sunday, October 23, 2016 at Logan Funeral Home in Ellijay, Ga. Memorial Services to honor his life will be held at the Good Samaritan Catholic Church in Ellijay, GA on Monday, October 24th at 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Full military contingent will follow outside of the Church from 11:00-11:30 AM. Lunch will be provided by the parish of the Good Samaritan Catholic Church at 11:30. All guests are invited to the 2:30 PM service for Ernie’s final destination with his wife at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA.
