The Gilmer High School wrestling team honored its state champions and place winners with a new wall plaque in the Noah Harris Center, dedicated during the Area 7-AAAA tournament held at GHS this past weekend.

The Gilmer Bobcats wrestling team ran roughshod over the competition, scoring 232.50 total points, a full 72.50 points more than the second place Lafayette Ramblers. The Bobcats placed 12 total wrestlers in the top four, guaranteeing a spot in the upcoming sectionals tournament, with five first place finishers.

Two Gilmer County students competed in the Joe Gawry Southeastern Middle School Championship on January 19th, 2013. Clear Creek Middle School students Kaylin Woodring (7th grade), and Leila Farist (8th grade), competed, due to their USA Swimming affiliation, despite there being no official middle school swim team in Gilmer County.

A local fifth grader, CJ Streicher, was voted Most Valuable Player 10U by the “Born to Compete” football league in Atlanta. Streicher, and other recipients, was presented a trophy by Sam Crenshaw on 11 Alive News this past Sunday. Streicher played linebacker and running back in for the Gilmer Bobcats youth football team.

The round robin style tournament features boys and girls’ basketball games played between Copper Basin, Fannin County, Pickens, and Gilmer High Schools.
