BOYS & GIRLS CLUB WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBER

The Boys & Girls Club of Gilmer County welcomes Bonnie Williams to its Advisory Board. Williams’ extensive non-profit experience includes serving as Vice Chairman of Family Connections; Secretary for Churches United in Service; Treasurer of Gilmer County Domestic Violence Task Force; and serving on the Board of Directors for Christian Learning Center.
“We’re delighted Bonnie has joined our Advisory Board,” said Bill Slaughter, President of the Boys & Girls Club of Gilmer County. “His experience in working with children and serving in non-profit environments will be of great help to us.”
Williams’ obvious dedication to local family-enhancing non-profits is based on his passion for improving children’s lives.
“I love kids!” Williams said.
“I’d like to see the Boys & Girls Club grow and provide recreation and spiritual growth for kids. I want to get the kids off the streets and into a structured program.”
Williams said “idleness is the Devil’s workshop” and that children are getting into drugs at an earlier age. Grade school is the time to reach them and the Boys & Girls Clubs’ after school programs essential to their wellbeing.
Williams was Director of Cottage Life for more than 2,000 mentally retarded children at Gracewood State School and Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. He’s served as a director in manufacturing environments throughout his career and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Georgia. He pursued further studies in Psychology and Mental Retardation in Augusta.
Bonnie and his wife Beverly reside in Ellijay and have four children, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The Club provides programs for local boys and girls in the areas of drug and alcohol prevention, delinquency intervention, health and fitness, career exploration, educational enhancement, good character and leadership development. A $35/year membership fee encourages all families to participate in our valuable program regardless of ability to pay. The program relies on the help and support of individuals, organizations, churches, businesses and volunteers.
Boys & Girls Clubs statistics prove the positive impact our programs make in children’s lives. Ninety-one percent are satisfied with their adult life; 57 percent said the Club saved their life; 90 percent graduate high school; 26 percent are likely to earn a college degree.
