Is a Charter School in Gilmer’s Future?

A Charter school could be in the future for Gilmer County. This week at the Board of Education meeting a special presentation was given regarding Charter schools and how they function.

Tabitha Press, Strategic Development Coordinator Charter School Division Georgia Department of Education, made a presentation on May 5th to the Gilmer County BOE regarding Charter schools.

Ms. Press did a power point presentation explaining to the board how an application for a Charter had to be presented and the submittal date requirement for the application.

She also explained all the steps involved after the local BOE approves the application or the next steps the application can take if the local BOE turns it down.

If turned down by the local BOE the Charter applicant can apply directly to the Georgia Department of Education. If the local BOE approves the Charter school it would have some authority over the school. However if they turn it down and the State approves the charter then the local BOE would have no authority over the school.
