Potter Produces

To quote the great Rakim, “It’s been a long time, I shouldn’t have left you.” I know I’ve let some readers and fans down the last few weeks, with “Transformers 3” and “The Hangover 2” coming out with no review in sight, plus the Braves won their 10,000th game and no comment whatsoever. My boss even asked me, “What happened to your column?” I’m sorry, but I just haven’t been moved by much lately. I guess I got lockout blues or something. That being said, if I want to be, “paid in full” I need to get to writing. How many Harry Potter reviews have you read, besides this one, that quote great emcees? Not many I can assure you. Just because I’m nerdy by nature does not mean that I can’t say hooray to Hip Hop. Besides, I guarantee the parking lot filling teenagers I encountered during my first attempt to see “Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows Part Two” know a great deal more about Wocka Flocka then I’ll ever know.

Let me say this first. I GREATLY UNDERESTIMATED THE APPEAL OF HARRY POTTER. I casually strolled up, along with my usual gang of comic/sports nerds that attend midnight movies with me, and was totally shocked to see the parking lot packed tighter than Kirstie Alley’s Under Armour. We were equally surprised when we saw the shows were sold out until the 3:00am show.

We had not realized that unlike comic book movies, there would be a great deal more people there than the just the nerds (us) who couldn’t wait until a normal hour for viewing. All those kids, who were in elementary school when “The Sorcerers Stone” came out, are now old enough to drive, and drive they did. I didn’t see that many teenagers at graduation. After a brief consideration, I decided that “I’m too old to be getting sweaty dancing ‘round with yall.” I couldn’t stay up that late, so I took the wife to Hogwarts the next night.

It was amazingly action packed. Some people were disappointed by the lack of action in “Deathly Hallows Part One.” They will not have the same problem with the sequel. It seems that the movie is one nonstop battle scene. From the beginning to the end, there are spells casts between wizards, monsters, even a dragon ride. For lack of a better term, I was spellbound throughout.

Now that I have praised the movie, the nerdy fanboy in me must point out that I have a bone to pick that I’ve had with the Potter series since, “Order of the Phoenix” and it is the fact that starting with “Order” there have been some discrepancies between the book and the movies. While I’m still somewhat vexed by those aforementioned discrepancies, I was not disappointed by the movie overall. It was well written, well acted, and a fitting end to a series that engrossed children of all ages for the better part of the last decade.

I highly recommend it to Harry Potter fans, as well as those who have just a passing interest in the series; however, I also recommend that those who are looking to follow the advice of D-Mite and “Read a Book” then go to your local library and check out the written version of Harry’s life and see if you agree with me that the books are the superior medium.
