Gilmer Gives All, Picked Apart By Pickens

The Gilmer Bobcats and Lady Cats had disappointing showings on the road Friday night, both losing at the hands of Pickens. The first varsity game of the evening featured the Lady Cats and the Dragonettes in what looked early on like a game that could come down to whoever had the last possession in the game.

Gilmer looked prepared to keep the game tight early on, leading the game 11-9 after the first quarter and trailing the Dragonettes by just four points at halftime. A highly contested third quarter saw the Lady Cats cut the Dragonettes’ lead to just two points going into the final quarter of play.

Unfortunately for Gilmer, Pickens got hot in the most important quarter of action, outscoring the Lady Cats 21-7 to win the game 51-35.

Bailey Charles led the Lady Cats in scoring with ten points. Brittany Lowman led the team in rebounding with eight. Ansley Mulkey also played well for Gilmer, scoring eight points and recording two steals in the game.

Looking to give the Gilmer faithful something to get excited about, the Bobcats hit the court looking to upend the Dragons in their den.

Gilmer’s chances were looking good early, as fast starts by Ryan Lowery and Joe Bob Charles saw the Bobcats trail the Dragons by just three points after the first quarter. The second quarter proved to be critical for Gilmer in its hopes of getting a win on the road, as they were outscored by Pickens 20-10 and trailed the Dragons 40-27 at the end of the first half.

The Bobcats did not stop fighting, scoring 25 points in the second half of play, but it just wasn’t enough to top Pickens. Gilmer fell to Pickens by a final score of 73-52, leaving their January 31st matchup as the last chance the Bobcats will have to top their biggest rival.

Ryan Lowery led the Bobcats in scoring and rebounding with nineteen points and nine rebounds. Connor Webber did an excellent job dishing the ball out to his teammates all night, finishing the game with four assists.

Gilmer’s next set of games come Tuesday, when they face off with the Cedartown Bulldogs at Gilmer High School. The girl’s game is scheduled to begin at 6:00, and the boy’s game is set to follow at 7:30.
