The Show Must Go On! GHS to Perform Les Miserables!

The Gilmer High School Theatre Group will perform Victor Hugo’s classic Les Miserables in the Ellijay Elementary School Auditorium next weekend. The performance will be the school edition of the play with a few modest changes, according to those close to the production.

Theatre-goers can expect a moving version of Hugo’s masterpiece, second only in popularity, perhaps, to The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Set in Revolutionary France, the play is a tale of redemption, charity, and self-sacrifice. The story follows the tumultuous journey of Jean Val jean, played by Jarod Vautrot, to redemption and peace, intermingled with Inspector Javert’s pursuit of Val jean. Over the course of the story, Javert, played by Jared Jones, also discovers something about himself, that he too is capable of forgiveness. Built upon Val jean’s moral development, the plot ascends like a cathedral, with the juxtaposed story of Marius Pontmercy’s arduous courtship of Cosette, where Marius is played by Jacob Bennett and Cosette, by Mia Burgess. Marius’ effort is at moments precarious and often doubtful, yet ultimately triumphs.

Expect GHS students to deliver an emotionally powerful and poignant performance, as they present the school version of Hugo’s masterpiece.

Performances are scheduled for Friday, May 4th at 7:00 P.M. and Saturday, May 5th at 2:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. Admission is free and all donations will go to the local food bank.
