County Calls on Senators to Save U.S. Sovereignty

The Gilmer County Board of Commissioners is working to preserve the sovereignty of the United States. During last week’s BOC meeting, the board approved a resolution to urge Georgia’s senators to vote against a series of United Nations treaties that strip our nation of its sovereignty, transferring it the U.N. The resolution was submitted by citizen and political activist Jack Smith.

The resolution states in part that,

“The people (of the United States) cannot accept any treaties that usurp any of the rights protected by the Constitution, and…the proposed treaties, Law of The Sea, International Criminal Court, U.N. Small Arms Treaty, Rights of the Child, and Code of Conduct in Outer Space, usurp rights guaranteed under our Constitution.”

In the Law of The Sea Treaty (LOST), for instance, the U.S. forfeits half of her oil and gas royalties from wells beyond the 200 mile continental shelf. The money is transferred to the International Seabed Authority, which then redistributes the money to third world nations. Analysts estimate that if the treaty passes, the U.S. will lose hundreds of billions of dollars.

During last week’s regular BOC meeting Smith said,

“We feel the sovereignty of our various agencies are being usurped by the United Nations. We want to have our government officials to go on record and oppose any United Nations sovereignty over the United States.”

Following Smith’s statement, Post Two Commissioner Danny Hall said that if these treaties are against the Constitution, then he is against the treaties. Post One Commissioner Will Beattie agreed, while Chairman J.C. Sanford commented that the list was a short list of things that could have been in the resolution. Sanford then made a motion to approve the resolution. The board voted unanimously to approve the motion. Analysts say the treaties could be ratified soon. Also, such treaties only require a majority vote in Senate for ratification.

“We, the elected governing Board of Commissioners of Gilmer County, Georgia,”

the last section of the document reads, “

do hereby request that you, the elected senators of the state of Georgia, not only vote against these treaties, but that you also do everything within your power to persuade every other senator to oppose them as well.”
