“First Fridays” rolled back into town Friday, July 6th, with its theme for the month being “Bicycle Rodeo”. Both adults and children got a chance to ride their bikes in downtown Ellijay at the event and to participate in safety obstacle courses with help from the Cartecay Bike Shop.
Terry Palmeri, part owner of the Cartecay Bike Shop said of the event,
“Really our main objective is to teach bicycle safety. We make sure that the kids know that they have to wear a helmet and just basic traffic laws so they can keep safe.”
The Cartecay Bike Shop also organized a special “Bike Crit” at the event. The “Bike Crit” was a special kind of obstacle course using a different kind of criteria which included the participants being sprayed with waterguns, the participants having to switch their bikes in the middle of the event, and the main prize going to the third person who crossed the finish line.
The Gilmer Chamber of Commerce (GCC), Gilmer Arts and Heritage Association (GAHA), and Better Home Town (BHT) program sponsors “First Fridays” every first Friday of the month with a different theme each month. The event is a group effort between the GCC, GAHA, and BHT program which includes music, artists, food, and shopping for guests and its goal is to promote business in the downtown area.
