Lady “Cats” Take Lumps at Lumpkin

The Lady Bobcats softball team traveled to Lumpkin County High School on Tuesday to take on the Lady Indians. After a controversial call ended the junior varsity game, which saw the Lady Indians get a 2-1 victory despite the game ending with Gilmer at the plate and two women on; the varsity took the field, falling 9-1. The Lady “Cats” made the trip fresh off a 2-4 tournament showing at the Lanier Pointe Invitational. Gilmer posted wins over Rabun and Flowery Branch.

The game began as a defensive struggle, Katlin Kilbourn took to the mound to start the game for Gilmer. Neither team took control until the bottom of the third inning, when an RBI sac fly followed immediately by a home run, put the home team up 2-0.

A two out rally looked to be in the works in the top of the fourth, when freshman DH, Kaylee Deyton, stole second after a single to right field. However, while aggressively trying to take third, she was thrown out to end the scoring threat.

The game was truly lost in the bottom of the fourth when the Lady Indians scored five more runs to push the lead up to 7-0.

Despite the deficit the Lady “Cats” kept clawing. Melanie Nicholson led off in the top of the fifth with a walk. Meghan Flowers followed by reaching first on a fielder’s choice, before stealing second. Flowers scored after stealing third and home on errant pitches, to give Gilmer its first and only run of the game.

The bottom of the fifth saw the home team score two more runs resulting in a mercy rule ending of the game.
