Gilmer Picks Up Win at Pickens: Lady “Cats” Catch “Nettes” 4-3

The Gilmer High School Lady Bobcats softball team secured the first non-tournament win of the season at the hands, and home, of hated rival Pickens High School. The Lady “Cats” clawed out a 4-3 come from behind victory. Taylor Powell’s game winning RBI bunt in the top of the seventh inning scored Emily Cantrell, and the “Cats” claimed victory a half inning later.The victory marked a sweep of the day for the Lady “Cats.” The junior varsity squad broke out the bats in abundance, posting an 8-3 win for the visitors. The JV Lady “Cats” jumped on the “Nettes” early.

Already leading 3-0, the “Cats’” Meghan Dotson hit a two run triple that made the score 5-0. Mckenzie Chambers’ RBI double scored Dotson, making the score 6-0, and the route was on. Chancey Davis ended the JV “Cats’” scoring for the inning, and the game, with a two run double for an 8-0 lead.

Joleigh Wright pitched four and a third innings of shut-out baseball, before the “Nettes” nabbed three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Chancey Davis finished the game on the mound, securing the save for the JV Lady “Cats.”

The varsity game began as a defensive schedule, as neither team scored until Gilmer’s Erin Barclay’s RBI single in the top of the fourth scored Powell. The “Nettes” nixed the lead immediately in the bottom of the same inning.

Kayla Howard’s RBI double scored Haley Kalson to tie the game at 1-1. Brook Wilson’s RBI single gave Pickens the lead at 2-1 and Paula Pickett picked the Pickens lead up to 3-1 with her own RBI single.

The game remained 4-3 in Pickens’ favor until top of the sixth. Skyler Banks’ RBI double Cantrell to cut the Pickens’ lead to one. The “Cats” secured the win with the aforementioned top of the seventh RBI’s from Cantrell and Powell. Despite the “Nettes” loading the bases with two outs, the “Cats” clutched victory when Kayla Howard popped out to center field.
