This weekend, the 41st Georgia Apple Festival began by celebrating with its annual Apple Pie Recipe Contest.
In the contest sponsored by the UGA Cooperative Gilmer County Extension Office, contestants were only allowed to cook an apple pie cheescake or an apple pie using fresh Georgia apples.
Winning the contest was Cumming, Ga resident Katherine Mendez, with her Autumn Apple Pie.
When asked what her secret was, Mendez told FYN,
“Practice!”

Also placing in the annual Apple Pie Contest was Andrea Roper. Roper traveled over 120 miles to be in the contest and placed second with her Grated Apple Pie.
