The Gilmer bobcats made their annual Christmas break trip to Pigeon Forge, the last big tournament before their march to the regional championship for duals and state championship January 11 and 12.Friday night was smooth sailing as Gilmer overpowered Seymour, TN and Walnut Hills, Ohio, 67-6 and 83-0 respectively.
Saturday morning the battle heated up, though, as Gilmer faced AAA defending state champion Jefferson. The Dragons proved to be more than the Bobcats could handle, missing two starters Daniel Bautista, who missed making the 120 mark by one tenth of a pound, and 220 wrestler Tyler betolini who was ineligible because of health issues. Jefferson won the match 37-21.
For the next match against Heritage of Maryville, TN, Head Coach Sam Snider opted to invest in and send out several backup Bobcat wrestlers. With several surprise pins, Heritage won the match 42-26.
The Bobcats finished the tournament strong, taking Second Place behind Jefferson, with wins over Wilson Central, KY, 37-31 and over host Pigeon Forge 43-5.
