“Cats” Cradle Causes Calamity for Cass’ Colonels

The Gilmer High School Bobcats basketball teams hosted the Colonels of Cass in the last home game of the season. Both teams swept the visitors. The girls survived a hot Lady Colonels fourth quarter to win by six, 48-42. The boys lambasted the Colonels, 61-40. The win secured an 11-0 home record for the boys as well as a school record 24 regular season wins.The girls’ game began with both teams pressing early. The Lady “Cats” paws saw more picked off passes, enabling the home team to acquire and early 7-2 lead. With 3:14 left in the first quarter the Gilmer increased its lead to 9-4 after two Bailey Charles on a lay up off an assist from Sarah Lambert. The period ended with the Lady “Cats” leading 11-7.

The Lady “Cats” clobbered the Colonels in the second quarter, outscoring Cass 17-7 to take a 28-14 lead into half time. Meghan Allen’s buzzer beating jumper as the half closed added salt to the proverbial wound of the Lady Colonels.

The third quarter was more of the Lady “Cats” cruising as Gilmer again outscored the Lady Colonels in the period, 10-9. Gilmer led 38-23 going into the fourth.

The Lady Colonels went to war in the fourth. Cass kept coming as the Lady “Cats” lead progressively shrunk; however the home team pulled out a 48-42 win despite being outscored 19-10 in the last period.

Bailey Charles led the Lady “Cats” with 13 points. Both Britton Farlow and Jade Green had eight points. Senior, Hope Watkins, finished with seven.

Between the girls’ and boys’ games the graduating seniors from both teams and the cheerleaders were honored. Hope Watkins and Brittany Lowman were the two senior Lady “Cats” honored. Connor Webber; Drew Parks; and Will Marshall were the male Bobcats honored.

The boys’ game was a thorough thrashing from start to finish as the “Cats” scored 12 unanswered points to start the contest. Cass’ first basket came with 55 seconds left in the first quarter. An “And 1” three point play by Gilmer’s Wheeler Lancey ended first period with Gilmer leading 15-2.

The “Cats” continued to cause catastrophe for Cass’ Colonels in the second period as the Colonels continue to struggle against Gilmer’s onslaught. The “Cats” led 32-17 at half time and cruised to a 61-40 victory in the second half.

The win marked a school record 24 regular season wins for the Bobcats, as well as an undefeated 11-0 home record.

Joe Bob Charles led the “Cats” with 24 points. Conner Webber finished with 15. Will Marshall chipped in nine.
