Lady “Cats’” Last Call: Caught by Catamounts 53-46

The Gilmer High School Lady Bobcats basketball team traveled across the mountain to face Dalton in the 7AAAA Region Tournament Tuesday night. The host team, Lady Catamounts, prevailed, ending the Gilmer’s Lady “Cats'” season with a 53-46 Dalton victory.Dalton controlled the opening tipoff, and play was underway. Gilmer’s defense was stingy early on, with most of the Dalton possessions lasting nearly a minute before anyone could get a shot off. Dalton kept the full court press on creating plethora of turnovers, which led to fast break points giving Dalton an early 16-6 lead over the Lady Cats.

Gilmer had a better second quarter. It started with a quick Brittany Lowman basket, followed by Britton Farlow’ steal and pass to Lowman who was fouled. She went to the line to hit the pair of free throws, and the visiting Lady “Cats'” defense picked up their intensity.

There was a lot of chatter Gilmer team that and frustrated the Lady Catamount offense. A Bailey Charles steal on the inbound led to two more points and Gilmer had pulled to within three points. Dalton called a timeout, and a 7-2 run to close the half making the score 27-19.

The 3rd quarter was off to a slow start with nearly two minutes running off the clock before Charles hit a pair of free throws. The Lady Catamounts started breaking the press and scoring baskets with ease forcing Coach Horton to call a timeout.

The teams traded baskets throughout the rest of the 3rd quarter, with Charles doing most of the damage for the Lady Cats. Dalton was still on top going into the final quarter, 39-27.

The 4th quarter saw the game reach its peak in intensity. The Gilmer Lady “Cats'” defense was strong for the entire quarter, and the offense was starting to come alive.

Big shots by Farlow, Charles, Lowman, and Jade Green brought the game to within eight points, and one could feel the intensity of the game rising with Coach Horton and the Lady Cats getting amped up.

Gilmer had to employ the foul and chase game plan with 1:30 left in the game. After only one made free throw by Dalton, Jenna Parks shot a three pointer that missed; however, she was fouled.

To the line she went with an opportunity to bring the game within six points, but only converted one of the three shots.

Another foul and missed free throw for the Lady Catamounts left Gilmer with another opportunity to cut the lead down. With :50 left, Farlow hits a two pointer, cancelled out by two made shots from the charity stripe for Dalton.

Parks hit a big three pointer to bring the deficit to five points, but the Lady Catamounts successfully converted their free throws down the stretch to win by a final score of 53-46.

The “Lady Cats'” season ended with this loss, but the team has a lot to be happy about with another solid season in the books. The leading scorers for the Lady “Cats” were Lowman with 14, Charles with 13, Parks with eight, and Farlow with seven.
