New Amphitheater Opening In Ellijay

For years concert enthusiasts had a decision to make: Drive south and fight the Atlanta traffic or drive north on back roads to Hiawassee. However, that is no longer the case thanks to a new amphitheater in Ellijay.

James Sturgeon of Blue Ridge bought 51 acres of land a few miles north of Ellijay near Highway 515 in August of 2012. Sturgeon purchased the land as an investment opportunity that he planned to pursue after retiring from running his hot tub store in Alpharetta.

In April of 2013, his investment plan began to take shape. After clearing out an overgrown lot with the help of a friend, Dennis, James’ realized what exactly he wanted to do with the land: clear the land and build an amphitheater. Hard work continued for both James and Dennis, and in less than 3 months James and Dennis had cleared out several acres.

On those acres there now rests a parking lot that will hold approximately 250 cars. There will also be VIP treatment. The small charge for this VIP treatment may be worth the money, as the VIP section will allow for quick access to the exits after concerts.

The venue will offer only General Seating on the grass, therefore blankets and lawn chairs are tolerated and encouraged. The purpose of offering general seating only is to keep ticket prices low and also to encourage a family-friendly environment.

But don’t let the family friendly environment fool you: Fun foolishness, with in reason, will be tolerated and imbibing will not be impeded, just bring your own, share if you dare and prepare to party.

Construction is currently underway. A 94 foot wide stage with a 300 inch viewing screen on each side will be complete in time for the inaugural concert August 10th with Confederate Railroad. Future concerts are also in the works, including show featuring Shenandoah and Doug Stone.
