The Gilmer High School Bobcats football team recently attended a Fellowship of Christian Athletes sponsored passing camp at Johnson High School Gainesville. The camp also featured a linemen challenge for those whose job is to engage in trench warfare as opposed to through the air. The Gilmer varsity finished fourth overall while the junior varsity linemen finished 1st in their division.Head coach, Wesley Tankersley spoke to FYN briefly about the full benefits of the FCA outing.
“One of the biggest things we’re trying to accomplish is to get the word of God out there a little bit. That’s one of the things that the FCA tries to accomplish; to teach kids about sportsmanship; to teach kids about good behavior.”
Tankersley talked about how the scrimmages gave his chance to get together in the summer for football work, which is often difficult for all coaches given the amount of student athletes that participate in multiple sports.
“Many times, especially in June, you’ve got baseball going on, you’ve got wrestling going on, you’ve got basketball going on there’s a lot of things going on for the kids it’s hard to get a lot of continuity during June but towards the end of June some of those other sports are starting to calm down a little bit.”
Tankersley also spoke about the benefits of attending a passing league scrimmage despite being a run oriented option team.
“We try to get to get together and get some continuity going, some learning some teaching going on today especially for us in the passing game. That’s not something we do to terrible much, but we do want to be effective with our passing game and we showed that last year; but this is a chance for us to work on our passing game a little bit and work on our coverages.”
