The Gilmer High School Lady Bobcats basketball team had mixed results last week, in two games played. On Tuesday night, the Lady “Cats” traveled to Gainesville to take on Chestatee, in a game full of unforced turnovers. These turnovers caused Gilmer to lose the game by a score of 40-37. Friday night, GHS traveled to Dalton to face the Lady Catamounts in an overall better game by Gilmer, which led to a 57-45 win.Tuesday’s game showcased bizarre play that is very uncharacteristic of the Lady “Cats.” Turnovers and bad shots really hindered the team early on, as the “Cats” only scored five points in the first quarter and four in the second quarter. At halftime, Gilmer was trailing 18-9.

The Lady “Cats” more than tripled its first half output in the second half, scoring 28 points. It wasn’t enough though, as Chestatee held Gilmer off for a 40-37 win. Hannah Jones led the team with 13 points, Bailey Charles had 12, and Jenna Parks had six.

Friday night was a welcome site for Gilmer as the Lady Bobcats looked to bounce back at Dalton.

Megan Allen opened the scoring for Gilmer after hitting one of her two free throws. Dalton pulled out to a 5-1 lead early, and then the Lady “Cats” held the Catamounts scoreless. Gilmer finished the quarter on a 13-0 run fueled by Britton Farlow, Charles, Allen, and Parks.

The second quarter saw the Lady “Cats” increase the lead early. Sarah Lambert hit a free throw and Jones scored two on an assist from Meghan Flowers. After a few minutes of sloppy play from both teams, Gilmer picked it back up with four straight baskets from Jade Green, Jones, and Charles.

A big Jones block led to a basket on the next possession and the Lady “Cats” had scored a whopping 26 unanswered points when Dalton finally called a timeout. The Lady Catamounts finally got things turned around and made a slight comeback, but Emily Reece’s three points still gave GHS a 30-18 halftime lead.

The second half saw the Lady “Cats” continue to put up points and make it tough for Dalton to score. Charles, Green, Lambert, and Farlow did the scoring early in the third quarter.

Kaylee “TJ” Deyton made a great play that showcased her on the court awareness. She and picked up a loose ball and hit a shot while falling away from the basket. Whitley Reece also chipped in two points and after the third quarter, Gilmer was ahead 44-30.

Foul trouble allowed Dalton to creep back into it at the end, but the Lady Catamounts couldn’t catch all the way up and the Gilmer won 57-45. Despite having issues all night, Gilmer persevered and pulled out a much needed win.

Charles led the Lady “Cats” with 17 points, Jones had 10, Farlow scored eight, and Green had six. Nearly every other Lady Cat scored on the night. Gilmer will travel to North Murray High School on Wednesday as they face Sonoraville on the opening night of the Mistletoe Madness Tournament.
