Calhoun Causes “Cats” First Fall

The Gilmer Bobcats basketball team traveled to North Murray to take part in the Mistletoe Madness tournament. It was a trip that saw the Bobcats lose its first game of the year, in a below average game against Calhoun. Days two and three were much better though, as Gilmer got back to its winning ways.Calhoun controlled the opening tip and got the early lead. Joe Bob Charles opened the scoring for the Bobcats making two free throws. Wheeler Lancey hit his patented runner to bring the “Cats” closer, but Calhoun pulled away quickly.

Two more free throws from Charles was all the points the “Cats” could muster in the first period. Gilmer trailed 17-6 after the first quarter.

Taner Reece got the second quarter started at the free throw line. After a Charles pull up jumper, Reece was back at the charity stripe after being fouled on a give and go. A Lancey steal led to a reverse layup by Charles which brought the score deficit down to seven, 19-12.

Late in the quarter, Charles got ahead of everyone and threw down a slam, then followed that with an NBA length long ball to bring the “Cats” close. At halftime, Gilmer trailed 24-21.

Charles had 10 points in the third quarter and helped the Cats get as close as two points. Corey Waters added four points and Lancey had two. With just the fourth quarter to play, GHS was down 40-37.

Charles was the only Bobcat to score in the fourth quarter, and Calhoun’s marquee player was able to put the game away. The final in Gilmer’s first loss of the year was 56-43. Charles led the team in scoring with 31, Lancey and Waters followed with 4, and Reece and Kyle Hedden finished with 2.

The final two games of the tournament went as planned for the Bobcats. The “Cats” beat Sonoraville 80-62 on Friday, then beat Christian Heritage on Saturday with a final score of 69-60.

Gilmer will face Cedartown on January 3 in Cedartown.
