JV Lady “Cats” Claw Out a Win, Varsity Has Bad “Knight”

On Friday night, the Gilmer High School junior varsity and varsity Lady Bobcats basketball teams traveled to Woodstock to face the River Ridge Lady Knights for the first time this year. It proved to be a tough night for all of the GHS teams, but the JV girls helped avoid a sweep by winning 42-29. The varsity fell 54-42.The JV squad looked strong in the win and continued a good season. Macy Chastain led the scoring with 13 points, followed by Sarah Aaron with seven and Haley Higingbotham with six.

Things didn’t go as well for the Varsity girls, who at times were simply outhustled.

River Ridge controlled the opening tip and used the size of the center to the Lady Knights’ advantage. Standing a good four inches or more over Gilmer’s girls, she grabbed rebounds and scored regardless of how well the Lady “Cat” defenders played her.

A steal by Gilmer led to a Sarah Lambert basket to open the scoring for the Gilmer. Bailey Charles hit a runner soon after to tie the game at 4-4. The Lady Knights began to heat up and started to pull away. Charles and Lambert each hit a free throw to make the score 12-6 at the close of the first quarter.

Things started to get out of hand in the second quarter as River Ridge went up 24-9. A three-pointer by Hannah Jones stopped the bleeding and sparked a 13-3 run by the Lady “Cats” that was fueled by another Jones three-pointer.

The GHS defense picked up the intensity, causing multiple turnovers late in the quarter, leading to a five point, 27-22, deficit at the half.

Another Lady “Cat” steal followed by a Charles basket was how the third quarter started. This is as close as it would get for Gilmer though as the girls failed to capitalize on many opportunities on the next few possessions. Jenna Parks managed to put four more points on the board, but Gilmer still trailed 35-28 after three.

Britton Farlow got in on the scoring in the fourth quarter while Charles and Lambert also chipped in. The Lady Knights’ point guard caught fire and answered every basket Gilmer scored. The Lady “Cats” looked like the better team on paper, but turnovers proved deadly in this one. When the final horn sounded, the Lady “Cats” fell 54-42.

Jones led Gilmer with 14 points, Charles followed with 12, and Lambert finished with seven. The Lady “Cats” will travel to Pickens County to take on Sarah Smith and the Dragonettes on Tuesday night at 6:00 PM.
