Henry Gartrell : Obituary

Henry Carl Gartrell, age 96 of Ellijay, Georgia passed on Friday, March 28, 2014.He was born Tuesday, October 16, 1917 in Whitestone, Georgia to his late parents Carl Lee “Gus” Gartrell and Cora Lee Daly Gartrell. Mr. Gartrell was a member of Whitestone Baptist Church for over 80 years. He was a member of Blaine Masonic Lodge #534, York Rite Shrine, Coosawattee Shrine Club and patron of Blaine Order of Eastern Star #478 for over 60 years. Mr. Gartrell also served as a past president of the Ellijay Lion’s Club. He was Mayor of Ellijay for four terms and served 30 years in North Georgia Planning and Development. He was a graduate of Pickens County High School Class of 1934, and attended Georgia Tech. He was employed as Whitestone Postmaster for over 33 years. Mr. Gartrell served his country honorably, in the United States Army, serving in the South Pacific theatre during World War II and was awarded three bronze battle stars. He is preceded in death by daughter Teresa Gartrell. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Whitestone Baptist Church, c/o Deryl Hyde, 53 Cripple Creek Drive, Ellijay, GA. 30536.

Survivors include wife of 61 years Audrey Garland Gartrell of the home in Ellijay, GA.; niece, nephews and in-laws Larry Gartrell of Jasper, GA, Mary G. and Joe Jones,of Jasper, GA., Tim Gartrell of Jasper, GA., Tony and Kelly Garland of Chatsworth, GA.; great nieces, great nephews and in-laws Kelby Gartrell of Jasper, GA., Ben Jones of Talking Rock, GA.,Tommy and Andrea Gartrell of Jasper, GA., Stephanie and
Bill DeArmon of Rockmart, GA., Caroline and Damien Sherry of Perth, Australia, Alison & Josh Williams of Atlanta, GA.,; several great grand nieces and nephews also survive; brother-in-law and special family friend C.L. Garland and Susie Jackson of Chatsworth, GA.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 30th, 2014 at Whitestone Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Johnson, Kelby Gartrell, and Byron Tillery officiating. Singing was performed by Billy Reece and Kathy Towery and piano music was by Michael Morris. Masonic and Military Graveside Interment followed in the Whitestone Baptist Church Cemetery, with Masonic Rites by Blaine Lodge #534, Cherokee Memorial Team, and local area masons, Military Rites were performed by the North Georgia Honor Guard. Pallbearers were Tony Garland, Benjamin Jones III, Tommy Gartrell, Bernard Jones, Gary Mosely and Joe Griffith. Honorary Pallbearers were Doug Towery, Earl Towery, Bob Mosley, James Garland, Harold Garland, Pat Daly, Garvin Davis, the Coosawattee Shrine Club, the B.P. morning crew, Danny Townsend, Barry Woods, Tommy Washam, Justin Tysinger, Mike Daly, Brad Coleman and Todd Coleman.
