Gilmer Board of Education Prepares for the New School Year

The Gilmer County Board of Education held a regularly scheduled meeting and workshop last week.

The agenda included approval of a new system- wide handbook, a new weapons policy, a Superintendent’s Report, an overnight field trip, the classified salary schedule, and a new policy for student Governance teams. Also approved was a new grading policy for kindergarten classes.

Previously, kindergarten students would either receive a pass or fail grade. The new policy uses the grades 60 or 90 The grading policy was implemented to satisfy new federal mandates requiring a numeric grade for all grades K-12.

Board members also discussed new guidelines recently implemented by the U.S.D.A. Federal law, the “Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010” restricts certain foods available at public schools. The new regulations present a hurdle for school fundraising efforts by requiring all snacks sold in school to contain fruits, vegetables, lean protein, or whole grains, and have limited sugar, fat, and salt.

Director of Operations Bob Sosbee gave an update to the board on the new construction projects.

Projects include: ceiling repairs, bathroom fixtures and plumbing, carpet installation, new surveillance systems, new paint for bus awnings, basket ball goal posts, turf at the high school stadium, and new concrete bleachers at the football stadium.

All projects are expected to be wrapped up before the beginning of the school year.
